Michel Ruffin, Manager Software Coordination Corporate CTO department – Bell Labs Alcatel-Lucent Michel Ruffin joined the CTO team by mid-2001 to coordinate the corporate recommendations for strategic software embedded in Alcatel-Lucent products. He is also in charge of the governance processes for the management of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). He is co-leading the Alcatel-Lucent FOSS steering committee and leads the product software steering committee. From 1998 to 1999, he lead a research team working on telecommunication middleware. He joined the Alcatel Corporate Research Center in 1996 for managing the middleware working groups in the ACTS European projects Vital and ReTINA. He is author or co-author of several major articles and patents. He was the co-chair of the OMG Telecom group from 1999 to 2007 and was member of the OMG Board of Director from 2001 to 2007. He was one of the co-founder of the Linux Foundation Carrier Grade Linux Working Group in 2002. In 2000, he received the OMG’s Distinguished Service Award and since 2001, he is a member of the Alcatel-Lucent Technical Academy. He served as expert for the European commission on IST projects (Coach and Artist2) from 2002 to 2008. Michel Ruffin got a Ph.D in computer science in 1992 at the University Paris VI (France). His Ph.D on logging techniques in distributed object-oriented environments was done at INRIA. In 1992-1993 he was research engineer at INRIA. From 1993 to 1995, he was a Human Capital and Mobility (HCM) European fellow at the University of Glasgow (Scotland) in the domain of distributed object-oriented persistent systems.
Fully assuming their choice to use free & open source software and the legal, organisational, technical and consequential issues, for many years major industrial players are designing, experiencing and improving some "best practices" to maximize their profits from open source and to frame associated legal and technical risks.
Relying on the testimony of these companies, the second panel will share, compare and discuss these practices and will measure the key role played by the industries for better implementation of open source.
