The Internet of Things : an open source perspective

Track: Internet of Things

Everybody understands what the Internet of Things (IoT) is, because it works with a metaphor: The interconnection of everything, including physical objects in a web of things. Despite this, no agreed-upon terminology has emerged yet. One is for sure however, it is happening and it will radically and quickly transform our daily lives, just as the Internet did in less than two decades. Open standards and open source software played a central role in this dazzling success and there is little doubt that they will even more profoundly shape IoT and contribute to its successful development and wide adoption. During this talk, we will review some major application domains for IoT, describe the wide spectrum of technologies that fall within IoT, try to explain why openness is paramount and finally describe several flagship open source IoT projects.
